Raoulia

Raoulia is a genus of low-growing herbaceous perennials belonging to the Asteraceae family. These plants are widely recognized for their dense, mat-forming habit, which creates a stunning, silvery appearance that looks remarkably like velvet or moss covering the ground.

Native to the high-altitude landscapes of New Zealand, these plants have adapted to survive in harsh mountainous environments. Their natural habitat consists of rocky slopes and scree fields, where they anchor themselves firmly to the substrate while facing extreme exposure to wind and fluctuating temperatures.

Botanically, Raoulia features tiny, densely packed leaves that are typically covered with soft hairs, providing the signature silver-grey coloration. The plants produce small, inconspicuous flower heads during the growth season, but their primary horticultural appeal remains their vegetative texture and consistent year-round visual interest.

Successful cultivation of Raoulia requires replicating its natural environment as closely as possible. The most critical factor is the drainage; the plant absolutely requires a gritty, lean, and free-draining soil mix. Excessive moisture, particularly during the winter months, is fatal, so placing them on slopes or in raised rock beds is highly recommended to prevent rot.

In terms of practical use, Raoulia is an essential element in rock gardens, alpine troughs, and xeriscaping projects. They are susceptible to root rot and fungal issues if the soil remains damp. By keeping the crown of the plant dry with a top dressing of fine gravel, growers can avoid most of the common health issues associated with this unique species.
