Mexican hat (Ratibida columnifera) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Asteraceae family. Known in horticulture and reclamation circles as a robust species, it serves both as an aesthetic element in landscaping and as a functional component in sustainable agricultural projects aimed at soil stabilization in arid regions.

Originating from the prairies of North America, this plant is naturally adapted to harsh continental climates. Its distribution extends from southern Canada through the central United States to northern Mexico. This broad range demonstrates the plant’s impressive capacity to survive in diverse environmental conditions, ranging from hot, dry summers to freezing winters.

Botanically, Ratibida columnifera is characterized by its distinctively elongated central disc, which forms a column-like shape, often reaching several centimeters in height. The root system is deep and taproot-based, allowing the plant to reach moisture reserves inaccessible to shallow-rooted species.

Propagation is primarily achieved through seeds, which require a cold stratification period to ensure uniform germination in the following spring.
