Dwarf buckthorn (Latin: Rhamnus pumila) is a perennial shrub belonging to the Rhamnaceae family. Unlike its taller relatives, this species exhibits a prostrate or low-growing habit, which is a direct adaptation to the harsh environmental conditions of its native alpine habitat.
Originating from the mountainous regions of Central and Southern Europe, particularly the Alps and Pyrenees, this shrub is naturally accustomed to growing on rocky slopes and limestone crevices. This evolutionary background makes the plant exceptionally resilient to cold, wind, and nutrient-poor soils.
The botanical structure of the plant features dense, rigid branches and small, leathery, elliptic leaves with distinct venation. Being a slow-growing species, it produces inconspicuous greenish flowers in the spring, followed by small, black drupes.
