The greater yellow-rattle (Rhinanthus angustifolius) is an annual herbaceous plant belonging to the Orobanchaceae family. It is recognized primarily as a root hemiparasite, which means it attaches to the root systems of host grasses to supplement its water and nutrient intake. This parasitic relationship significantly restricts the growth and productivity of the surrounding forage grasses.

This species is widely distributed across temperate regions of Europe and Asia. It typically thrives in damp meadows, river floodplains, and unmanaged pastures where host grasses are abundant. As a weed, it is particularly problematic in areas where biodiversity management is combined with hay production, as its aggressive growth can suppress desirable grass species.

Botanically, the plant is characterized by a height of up to 50 centimeters, square stems, and serrated opposite leaves. The flowers are bright yellow and arranged in terminal spikes. When the seeds reach maturity, they rattle inside the dry calyx, a trait that gives the plant its common name and facilitates seed dispersal through wind and mechanical disturbance.

Regarding cultivation requirements, Rhinanthus angustifolius prefers moist, nutrient-rich, or slightly acidic soils. It is not a traditional crop but an opportunistic colonizer. Effective management requires maintaining soil fertility and ensuring that pastures are properly drained, as well-established, vigorous grasses are naturally more resistant to the attachment of yellow-rattle haustoria.

The primary agricultural strategy for managing this plant is the timely cutting of meadows. By harvesting the hay before the yellow-rattle seeds have fully developed, farmers can significantly deplete the soil seed bank and prevent further spread. In extreme cases, reseeding with aggressive, fast-growing forage mixes can help crowd out the parasite.
