In agronomy, this species is categorized as a root hemiparasite, a plant that photosynthesizes but relies on the roots of neighboring host plants, typically grasses, to obtain water and mineral nutrients via specialized structures called haustoria.
Native to temperate regions of Eurasia, it is commonly found in meadows, grasslands, and forest margins. While not a conventional crop in terms of mass production, it is highly valued in environmental restoration and meadow management. Its presence can significantly alter the competitive dynamics within a sward, preventing certain aggressive grasses from dominating the ecosystem.
The botanical profile includes an erect, branched stem, opposite leaves, and distinctive yellow, bilabiate flowers. After pollination, the calyx enlarges to form a papery capsule containing seeds. When these seeds mature and rattle within the capsule, the plant disperses them. The root system is the most critical feature, functioning as the primary mechanism for parasitic attachment to hosts.

It prefers loam or sandy-loam soils with moderate fertility.
