Yellow rattle (Latin: Rhinanthus major L.) is an annual herbaceous plant belonging to the Orobanchaceae family. It is recognized in agronomy as a hemiparasite, meaning it derives part of its nutrients and moisture by attaching its roots to the root systems of host plants, particularly grasses and certain types of clover, utilizing specialized organs called haustoria.
Native to temperate regions of Europe and Asia, this plant is commonly found in meadows, pastures, and disturbed grasslands. It thrives in well-drained, nutrient-moderate soils. Its presence is highly dependent on the mowing regime of the field, as it requires specific light and temperature conditions during its early growth stage in the spring to establish itself successfully.
Botanically, the plant features a branched stem reaching 20–60 cm in height. It has lanceolate, serrated leaves arranged oppositely. The flowers are bright yellow, often accompanied by reddish-tinged calyces. When the seeds reach maturity, they detach inside the dried, bladder-like seed pods, creating a distinct rattling sound when shaken, which is the origin of its common name.
From an agricultural standpoint, managing yellow rattle is crucial. Because it stunts the growth of vigorous grasses, it is often seen as a weed in intensive hay production. However, it is also a powerful tool for meadow restoration. The most effective control strategy is cutting the meadow early in the summer, specifically before the plant sets seed, to prevent re-colonization and reduce the seed bank in the soil.
