The plant originates from the tropical forests of Brazil, where its ancestors grew as epiphytes on trees or in rocky crevices. Today, it is cultivated globally as an ornamental crop in greenhouses and indoor gardens. Its natural adaptation to high-humidity, dappled-light environments dictates its specific needs for successful cultivation in domestic or professional settings.

Botanically, this species is characterized by segmented, flattened, or slightly ribbed succulent stems. The flowers are radially symmetrical and come in shades of pink, red, or violet, blooming from the areoles at the tips of the segments.
