Description
Rhizanthella gardneri, commonly known as the Western underground orchid, is a remarkable species belonging to the family Orchidaceae. This plant is unique because it spends its entire life cycle, including flowering, beneath the soil surface, making it one of the most cryptic and biologically fascinating members of the orchid family.
The species is endemic to the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia. It maintains an obligate symbiotic relationship with a specific mycorrhizal fungus, which in turn connects the orchid to the root systems of the broom honey-myrtle (Melaleuca uncinata). This complex tri-partite relationship is essential for its survival.
Botanically, the plant lacks chlorophyll, rendering it non-photosynthetic. Instead of leaves, it features a thick, fleshy underground stem. Its inflorescence consists of a dense head of tiny, fragrant flowers that attract subterranean insects like termites and gnats, which are the primary pollinators for the species within its dark, earthy environment.
In terms of agricultural status, this plant cannot be cultivated. It does not exist as a crop, as its survival relies entirely on undisturbed, ancient ecosystems. Any agricultural activity, such as soil tilling or the removal of native shrubs, proves fatal to the species. Therefore, agrotechnical standards are focused strictly on habitat preservation and environmental monitoring.
There are no pests or diseases in an agricultural sense, as the orchid is a specialized wild species. However, it faces severe threats from environmental degradation. Efforts to save the species include:
