Rhizophora mucronata, commonly known as the loop-root mangrove or red mangrove, belongs to the Rhizophoraceae family. It is a vital woody plant species that dominates intertidal tropical coastal environments, providing essential ecosystem services and industrial resources.

Originating from the Indo-Pacific region, this species is found in East Africa, Southeast Asia, and Northern Australia. It thrives in muddy, saline-rich coastal zones where it occupies the seaward edge of the mangrove forest. Its natural distribution is largely determined by the frequency and depth of tidal inundation.

Botanically, the plant is characterized by its prominent arching stilt roots, which provide mechanical support in soft mud and facilitate oxygen uptake. The leaves are elliptic, leathery, and dark green, equipped with glands that help excrete excess salt. A defining biological feature is vivipary, where the embryo develops into a long, cigar-shaped propagule while still attached to the parent tree, allowing for rapid rooting upon detachment.

Cultivation requires specific environmental parameters, including tropical temperatures and regular saline water exposure. In reforestation projects, propagules are collected and planted in intertidal zones with appropriate sediment composition. While the species is highly resilient to natural conditions, successful cultivation relies on maintaining clean, unpolluted water and preventing excessive sediment drift during the early stages of growth.

Commercially, the loop-root mangrove is valued for its dense, durable wood, frequently used for charcoal production and construction. The bark is rich in tannins and is extensively used in leather tanning and natural dye production. Furthermore, these forests act as critical carbon sinks and natural buffers against coastal storms, providing a nursery for various marine species.
