Kurume Azalea (Rhododendron kurume) is a refined evergreen or semi-evergreen shrub belonging to the Ericaceae family. Known for its compact habit and spectacular floral display, this group of hybrids was developed in Japan and has become a staple for ornamental horticulture worldwide due to its dense branching and abundant blooms.

The origin of this culture is deeply rooted in Japanese gardening tradition, specifically in the city of Kurume. It thrives in temperate regions with high atmospheric humidity and protection from harsh midday sun. Its architectural form makes it an ideal candidate for rock gardens, low hedges, and decorative containers in landscape projects.

Botanically, the plant is characterized by small, leathery leaves and a shallow, fibrous root system that requires specific soil conditions to function effectively. The growth rate is relatively slow, allowing the plant to maintain its structural integrity over many years with minimal pruning. During the spring blooming season, the bushes are typically transformed into vibrant color masses.

The agrotechnical requirements for Kurume Azaleas are stringent, focusing primarily on soil acidity and drainage. They strictly demand acidic soil (pH 4.5–5.5) rich in organic matter. Regular mulching with pine needles or bark is mandatory to maintain soil moisture levels and suppress weed growth.
