Crystalwort (Riccia fluitans) is a distinctive aquatic plant belonging to the liverwort division (Marchantiophyta) and the Ricciaceae family. As a non-vascular, thalloid plant, it lacks true roots, stems, or leaves, absorbing nutrients directly through its branched green thalli from the surrounding water column.
The plant possesses a cosmopolitan distribution, native to a wide range of aquatic environments across the globe, including ponds, ditches, and slow-moving rivers. Due to its adaptability, it is widely utilized in aquaculture systems, providing essential cover for fry and a natural filtration component for water quality management.
Botanically, Riccia fluitans forms dense, bright green mats that float on the water surface. Its growth habit is characterized by rapid vegetative division. Under ideal conditions, a small fragment can quickly colonize the entire surface area of a tank or pond, making it a highly efficient biomass producer for specific aquatic purposes.
Successful cultivation requires high light intensity and precise temperature control, typically ranging between 20°C and 28°C. In controlled farming environments, the plant relies on supplemental dissolved minerals and carbon dioxide.
