It is highly valued in Central and West African agroforestry systems for its edible seeds, which are known commercially as njansang or akpi. The tree serves as both a staple food source and a significant cash crop for rural populations.

Native to the tropical rainforests of Africa, the tree grows optimally in regions with high annual rainfall and consistent temperatures. It typically reaches heights of up to 35 meters. Its root system is extensive, which allows it to thrive in a range of soil types, including those that may have low nutrient density, provided there is adequate moisture throughout the growing season.

The cultivation of Ricinodendron heudelotii requires careful site selection. Young seedlings are sensitive to prolonged periods of drought and high weed competition, necessitating intensive management during the establishment phase.
