Robiquetia cerina is a rare species of epiphytic orchid belonging to the Orchidaceae family. This culture is a monopodial plant that grows on tree trunks and branches in its natural environment. Although primarily classified as a decorative plant for greenhouses, it requires strict adherence to agronomic standards typical for tropical crops.

The plant originates from the humid tropical forests of Southeast Asia, including regions in the Philippines. Its natural habitat is characterized by consistently high temperatures and significant rainfall throughout the year. In agronomic conditions, this crop is successfully grown in specialized nurseries and private collections that replicate its native microclimate.

Botanical characteristics include fleshy, oblong leaves arranged in two rows on the stem, and dense raceme inflorescences. The flowers are noted for their waxy texture and distinctive yellowish or greenish-yellow hue, which gives the species its name "cerina," meaning "waxy" in Latin. The root system is aerial, which is a critical factor when selecting an appropriate cultivation substrate.

Cultivation requirements include high air humidity (at least 70-80%) and diffused but intense lighting. The temperature should be warm, ranging between +22 and +28 degrees Celsius. Pine bark blocks or hanging baskets with minimal addition of moisture-retaining sphagnum moss are recommended as substrates to ensure free air circulation around the roots.

Commercial and hobbyist use is limited to ornamental floriculture and plant breeding. Typical problems during cultivation include:

  • Spider mite infestations due to excessively dry air.
  • Development of fungal rots if there is stagnant moisture in the substrate.
  • Scale insect attacks, which require the use of systemic insecticides.
  • Loss of leaf turgor caused by irregular watering schedules.
