The Damask rose (Latin: Rosa damascena), often associated with Turkish agriculture due to its massive production in the Isparta region, is a perennial flowering shrub belonging to the Rosaceae family. It is globally recognized as one of the most important oil-bearing crops, valued for its complex and intense floral fragrance that is essential to the luxury perfume industry.
The origin of this species dates back to the Middle East, though it has been cultivated for centuries across diverse climatic zones. Today, the largest agricultural plantations are concentrated in Turkey and Bulgaria. These regions provide the ideal combination of altitude, high humidity during the blooming season, and well-drained soils that are necessary to maximize the oil content in the petals.
Botanically, the plant is a deciduous shrub that can reach heights of up to two meters. It features sturdy stems adorned with large, hooked prickles and pinnate leaves. The flowers are generally pink to light red, typically appearing in clusters, and are famous for their ability to produce a higher yield of essential oil compared to other rose varieties.
Successful cultivation requires meticulous agricultural practices. The plants thrive in neutral to slightly acidic, fertile soils. Irrigation management is critical, particularly during the budding phase. Pruning is essential for maintaining the structure of the shrub, removing dead wood, and ensuring that energy is directed toward the production of high-quality floral biomass.

Beyond the fragrance and cosmetic sectors, the flowers are increasingly used in the culinary industry for flavoring, as well as in traditional medicine for their therapeutic and anti-inflammatory properties.
