Roscoea auriculata

Roscoea auriculata is a stunning perennial herbaceous plant that belongs to the ginger family, known as Zingiberaceae. It is highly valued in horticulture for its spectacular, orchid-like flowers that bring an exotic touch to any temperate garden landscape.

The plant originates from the high-altitude regions of the Himalayas, primarily in Nepal and the adjacent areas of India. Because of its alpine origins, it has evolved to thrive in cool, moist environments and possesses a natural dormancy period during the colder months, which is essential for its life cycle.

Botanically, it is characterized by its rhizomatous root system, which produces dense clusters of stems enveloped in leaf sheaths. The leaves are typically lance-shaped and deep green. The flowers exhibit a wide range of purple and violet hues, featuring distinctive lateral lobes, which give the plant its unique aesthetic appeal.

Cultivation requires well-drained, humus-rich soil that remains consistently moist but not waterlogged.
