Coast grass

Coast grass (Rostraria litorea) is an annual herbaceous plant belonging to the grass family Poaceae. This species is widely recognized for its ability to thrive in harsh coastal environments and arid regions, where it plays a significant role in stabilizing sandy soils and maintaining local biodiversity.

The native distribution of this plant is centered in the Mediterranean region and parts of the Middle East. It typically occupies coastal dunes, sandy wastelands, and inland arid steppes. These environments are characterized by high salinity, low organic matter content, and significant exposure to wind and direct sunlight, conditions which the species handles with ease.

Botanically, the plant is characterized by a relatively short stature, typically ranging from 10 to 30 centimeters in height. Its foliage is slender and narrow, typical of many Mediterranean grasses. The inflorescence takes the form of a dense, spike-like panicle. As an annual, it completes its life cycle quickly during the favorable seasons, ensuring survival through a high seed production rate.

In terms of growing requirements, the species is highly drought-tolerant and prefers well-drained, porous soils. It is not demanding regarding nutrient levels, making it suitable for areas where more sensitive crops would fail. The plant shows strong adaptability to high UV exposure and fluctuating coastal temperatures, which are limiting factors for many other grass species.

From an agricultural and land-management perspective, Rostraria litorea is valued for its potential in soil restoration projects. Its root structure helps mitigate wind erosion in coastal areas and helps stabilize shifting sands. While it is not a primary livestock forage, it can contribute to the vegetation cover of rangelands in marginal areas, aiding in the prevention of desertification.
