Itchgrass, known scientifically as Rottboellia cochinchinensis, is a highly invasive annual grass belonging to the Poaceae family. While not an agricultural crop, it is recognized globally as one of the most destructive weeds in tropical and subtropical agriculture, significantly impacting the yields of maize, sugarcane, and upland rice production.
Originating from Southeast Asia, this species has successfully naturalized across various tropical regions of the world, including Africa, the Americas, and Australia. Its rapid proliferation is due to its high phenotypic plasticity, allowing it to colonize disturbed habitats, roadsides, and cultivated fields with exceptional ease and speed.
Botanically, it is a robust grass that can grow up to 3 meters in height. The stems are characterized by sharp, stiff hairs that can cause significant skin irritation upon contact, earning it the common name "itchgrass." The inflorescences are cylindrical, jointed racemes that break into individual segments, each containing a single seed, which aids in dispersal.
The plant thrives in warm, moist climates and prefers well-drained, fertile soils. Its agronomic management requires a proactive approach, as the plant grows faster than most crops and possesses a high seed bank potential. Key control strategies include:
