Common madder (lat. Rubia tinctorum L.) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Rubiaceae family. This species is historically significant as one of the most important dye-yielding plants, traditionally harvested for the vibrant red pigments concentrated in its roots.
The plant originates from the Mediterranean region, Western Asia, and Central Asia. It thrives in temperate climates and is cultivated in areas where the soil conditions allow for deep, unimpeded root development, which is essential for maximizing the yield of natural dye components.
Botanically, madder is characterized by its long, creeping, and branched rootstock that has a red, fleshy bark. The stems are square-shaped and can reach over a meter in length, often clinging to other vegetation. Its leaves are lanceolate, arranged in whorls, and the small, star-shaped yellow flowers bloom in late spring.
Regarding cultivation, madder prefers deep, well-drained, sandy loam soils that are rich in calcium. It requires a sunny location and consistent moisture during the initial growth phases. Farmers typically harvest the roots in the third year after planting to ensure optimal pigment concentration.
The primary economic use of madder is in the extraction of alizarin, a dye once standard for dyeing fabrics and yarns. Beyond its industrial role, the plant has long been valued in traditional and modern herbal medicine for its diuretic and antispasmodic properties, specifically related to the urinary tract.
The crop is susceptible to certain fungal pathogens, particularly root rot, which is often exacerbated by soil compaction or excessive humidity.
