Rubus australis, commonly known as the swamp lawyer or bush lawyer, is a woody climbing plant belonging to the Rosaceae family. Unlike common raspberry cultivars, this species is defined by its long, sprawling, and hook-laden stems that allow it to scramble over other vegetation. It is a distinctive member of the New Zealand flora, often found occupying forest margins and scrublands.

The plant is native to New Zealand, where it demonstrates remarkable ecological plasticity. It flourishes in a wide range of habitats, spanning from sea level to subalpine regions. Its natural distribution is primarily driven by the availability of moisture and vertical support structures, making it a key component of the dense, tangled understories of native temperate rainforests.

In an agricultural setting, management involves rigorous pruning to keep the vigorous growth within bounds and the provision of sturdy trellises.
