Rubus hochstetterorum

Rubus hochstetterorum is a perennial shrub belonging to the Rosaceae family. This plant is an endemic species native to the specific island conditions of the Azores and is of significant botanical interest as a wild relative of commercial blackberry and raspberry cultivars.

The natural range of this species is confined to the Azores archipelago. The plant has adapted to a humid oceanic climate, preferring elevated areas with high atmospheric humidity and locations protected from strong winds. In its natural habitat, it is found on mountain slopes under conditions of moderate temperature and stable soil moisture.

Botanically, the plant features the typical structure of the Rubus genus: semi-woody, thorny stems and compound leaves. The flowers possess the structure common to the Rosaceae family, and the fruits are aggregate drupes. Upon ripening, the berries change color, which attracts birds that aid in seed dispersal within the natural ecosystem.

Agronomic requirements for this species include the necessity for loose, well-drained soils with a slightly acidic pH. The plant is extremely sensitive to sudden fluctuations in humidity and low temperatures, making industrial cultivation limited to regions with mild maritime climates that prevent extreme frost or drought conditions.

In the future, the study of the Rubus hochstetterorum genome could contribute to improving the resistance of commercial blackberry varieties against specific fungal pathogens common in island ecosystems with high humidity.
