Limestone wild petunia (Latin: Ruellia strepens) is a herbaceous perennial plant belonging to the Acanthaceae family. This species is often referred to as a native wildflower, valued for its ability to thrive in shaded environments. The botanical name reflects its classification, while the common name highlights its specific habitat preferences in nature.

The plant is native to North America, primarily found in woodland areas, floodplains, and near limestone outcrops. Due to its natural evolutionary adaptation, the plant possesses the characteristic feature of explosive seed dispersal, where mature capsules burst to eject seeds, a behavior common among several members of the Ruellia genus.

Botanically, Ruellia strepens features upright stems that can reach heights of up to three feet. The leaves are opposite and ovate to lanceolate, providing a lush green foliage cover. The flowers are trumpet-shaped, typically light violet or lavender in color, which bloom during the warmer months and attract various local pollinators, including bees and butterflies.
