Salacia reticulata is a woody perennial shrub or climber belonging to the family Celastraceae. In traditional South Asian medicine, it is widely recognized as 'Kotala himbutu' and has been utilized for centuries due to its profound impact on metabolic health and blood sugar regulation.

The plant is native to the tropical forests of Sri Lanka and India. It thrives in high-humidity environments with consistently warm temperatures. In terms of commercial cultivation, it is restricted to tropical regions, as the plant is extremely frost-sensitive and cannot survive temperatures below 15°C, requiring greenhouse conditions in non-tropical zones.

Botanically, it features a sturdy, woody vine structure with leathery, elliptical leaves. Its root system is deep and complex, which is of great agronomic interest because the roots and stems are the primary reservoirs for potent bioactive compounds such as salacinol and kotalanol, which are known to inhibit digestive enzymes that break down carbohydrates.

Agronomic management requires nutrient-rich, well-draining loamy soils with a pH ranging between 5.5 and 6.5. High levels of air and soil humidity are critical for success. The plant requires structural support for its climbing habit and should be protected from harsh, direct sunlight, especially during the early stages of development.
