Eastwood's willow

Eastwood's willow (Salix eastwoodiae) is a perennial deciduous shrub belonging to the Salicaceae family. It is a distinctive alpine species known for its resilience and ability to thrive in harsh, high-elevation environments.

The plant is native to the mountainous regions of Western North America, including the Sierra Nevada and Cascade Range. It typically inhabits subalpine and alpine meadows, often found along stream banks, pond edges, and wet seepages where water availability is consistent throughout the growing season.

Botanically, this shrub is characterized by its compact, sometimes prostrate growth form, typically reaching 1 to 2 meters in height. The leaves are generally lanceolate or elliptic and often feature a silky, pubescent surface, which acts as a protective mechanism against harsh wind and UV radiation at high altitudes.

The cultural requirements for Salix eastwoodiae include a cool climate and consistently moist, well-draining soil. It is not drought-tolerant and requires sufficient moisture to maintain its vigor.
