The Euxine willow (Salix euxina) is a fast-growing woody plant belonging to the willow family (Salicaceae). It is widely recognized in modern agriculture as a key species for Short Rotation Coppice (SRC) systems, specifically designed to produce renewable biomass for energy purposes in a sustainable and efficient manner.

The species is native to the Black Sea region, which is reflected in its Latin nomenclature. Due to its natural adaptation to various soil moisture regimes, it has been successfully introduced as a commercial crop across temperate climate zones. It thrives in regions where traditional agriculture may be challenging, effectively utilizing marginal lands to produce consistent yields of wood chips.

Botanically, Salix euxina is characterized by its remarkable vegetative vigor. It features a robust root system and multiple flexible stems that regrow rapidly after each harvest. This regenerative capacity allows for a harvest cycle of 2 to 3 years, with the stool (the root system) remaining productive for several decades, usually between 20 and 25 years.

Agricultural success depends on proper site selection and soil preparation. The crop prefers deep, moisture-retentive soils such as loams or sandy loams. Before establishing a plantation, the soil must be cleared of perennial weeds and deep-ploughed. Regular soil moisture management is critical in the early stages, as establishing a strong root system is essential for subsequent biomass yield.

To mitigate these risks, agronomists recommend maintaining genetic diversity in the plantation and adhering to strict sanitary practices, such as removing infected biomass and ensuring proper plantation spacing to promote good air circulation.
