Silky osier (Salix holosericea) is a hybrid willow species belonging to the family Salicaceae. It is a natural cross between Salix cinerea and Salix viminalis, combining the resilience of the former with the rapid, straight-growing stem characteristics of the latter, making it a highly valued plant for agricultural and ornamental purposes.
Originating from European river corridors, the plant has spread across various temperate regions due to its versatility. Its distribution in agricultural landscapes is primarily driven by its adaptability to moisture-rich soils and its ability to act as a natural soil binder in areas prone to periodic flooding or erosion.
Botanically, it is recognized by its lanceolate leaves covered in fine, silky hairs, which give the foliage a matte, silver-green appearance. The shrub typically grows to several meters in height and develops vigorous shoots that are flexible and durable, making them ideal for harvesting in managed biomass or craft plantations.
The agronomic requirements focus on moist, nutrient-rich soils with good drainage. While the species is tolerant of various substrates, it performs best in slightly acidic to neutral soils. Maintenance involves coppicing—cutting the stems close to the ground—on an annual or biennial cycle to ensure the production of uniform, high-quality withes.
Economic applications are broad, ranging from traditional basket weaving and furniture making to ecological restoration projects like riparian buffer strips. It is also increasingly researched as a biomass crop. Common pests include willow beetles and aphids, while fungal diseases such as leaf rust or willow anthracnose can affect plantations under poor airflow or excessive humidity conditions.
