Meyer's willow

Meyer's willow (Salix meyeriana) is a perennial woody plant belonging to the willow family (Salicaceae). Depending on the growth environment, it can develop as a large shrub or a small tree, typically reaching heights of up to 6 meters. It is characterized by its distinct, shiny, dark green leaves and a vigorous growth habit that makes it highly adaptable to wetland ecosystems.

The native range of this species extends across North-East Asia, including Siberia, the Russian Far East, and parts of China and Korea. It is ecologically specialized for riparian habitats, floodplains, and damp meadows. The species is highly valued for its extreme cold hardiness, allowing it to thrive in regions with harsh winters and short growing seasons.

In terms of agricultural requirements, Meyer's willow prefers moist, nutrient-rich soils with good aeration. While it is tolerant of temporary waterlogging, it performs best in well-drained but consistently hydrated soil. Propagation is most efficient through stem cuttings, which should be planted during the dormant season to ensure optimal rooting and survival rates in the field.

The economic utility of the crop is significant. It is widely used in landscape engineering for bank stabilization and erosion control. Furthermore, its rapid biomass accumulation makes it a candidate for short-rotation coppice (SRC) systems aimed at bioenergy production. It also serves as a source of raw materials for traditional willow crafts and environmental remediation efforts.

Management of the plantation requires attention to health and vigor. Common challenges include leaf rust and powdery mildew, especially in regions with high humidity. Insect pests such as willow leaf beetles can impact the aesthetic value and yield. Recommended management practices include:
