Blueberry willow (Salix myrtilloides) is a small, deciduous shrub belonging to the Salicaceae family. Unlike large willow species used for timber or biomass, this plant is an ornamental and ecological niche crop. Its unique morphology and adaptation to harsh, wet conditions make it an interesting subject for specialized horticulture.
The native range of the species extends across northern and temperate Eurasia. It typically grows in peat bogs, fens, and margins of wetlands. Because it is highly adapted to these extreme environments, it is often utilized in restoration projects aiming to revitalize degraded wetland areas and stabilize acidic soil profiles.
Botanically, the plant is characterized by its low stature, rarely exceeding one meter in height, and its small, oval leaves that resemble those of a blueberry. Its growth habit is often trailing or spreading, allowing it to form dense mats. The twigs are slender and flexible, typical for the Salix genus, yet uniquely colored to blend into the mossy landscape of its habitat.
Cultivation requirements are strict: the blueberry willow demands consistently moist, acidic, and nutrient-poor soils like peat or damp sand. It does not tolerate drought or stagnant, overly alkaline conditions. In garden settings, site selection is crucial, as the plant needs a high water table and plenty of direct sunlight to thrive and maintain its characteristic foliage color.
This species serves several purposes, ranging from erosion control in moist environments to acting as an early-season pollen source for pollinators. Regarding protection, the main threats are leaf rust and fungal pathogens that thrive in humid, poorly ventilated areas. Regular monitoring and thinning of dense growth help maintain plant health and prevent the spread of typical willow pests.
