Successful propagation requires well-drained, acidic to neutral soil and a climate that avoids high heat, which can lead to stress in this arctic-adapted species. Maintaining the correct soil moisture levels is vital, as the plant is highly intolerant of prolonged waterlogging.

In terms of ecological utility, the polar willow acts as a critical food source for arctic wildlife, particularly reindeer and various rodent species. Its presence contributes to the stabilization of thin arctic soils, preventing erosion in fragile environments.
