Balsam willow

Balsam willow (Salix pyrifolia) is a perennial woody plant belonging to the willow family (Salicaceae). It is recognized for its unique, glossy leaves that resemble those of a pear tree, which serves as a primary identifying characteristic. As a hardy shrub or small tree, it is highly regarded for its ecological versatility and aesthetic value in varied landscapes.

The native distribution of this species spans the northern regions of North America, including much of Canada and the northern United States. It is a moisture-loving plant, typically found in wetlands, stream banks, and boggy woodland areas.
