It is a resilient plant, valued for its adaptability in various environmental conditions, ranging from forest clearings to sandy landscapes.
The native range of this species extends throughout the boreal and temperate zones of Eurasia, including Northern and Eastern Europe and parts of Siberia. Historically, this willow has been vital for stabilizing soil on marginal lands. It is a pioneer species, frequently appearing in areas affected by natural or anthropogenic disturbances, where it helps prevent erosion and prepares the ground for other flora.
Botanically, Starke's willow typically grows as a small, spreading shrub ranging from 0.5 to 2 meters in height. Its branches are often smooth, showing reddish or brownish hues, and its foliage consists of elliptical leaves with a slightly matte texture. Flowering occurs in early spring, producing catkins that provide essential early-season nutrition for pollinators emerging after winter.
Regarding cultivation requirements, Salix starkeana prefers well-drained, light-textured soils such as sandy loams. While it is hardy and capable of surviving in various climates, it performs best when exposed to direct or partial sunlight. Its drought tolerance is significantly higher than that of most willow species, making it an excellent candidate for xeriscaping or low-maintenance landscaping projects.
The economic and practical use of this shrub focuses primarily on land restoration, slope stabilization, and biodiversity support. In terms of maintenance, it requires minimal intervention, primarily seasonal pruning to remove deadwood and maintain vigor. Common pests include leaf-eating beetles and occasional rust fungi; however, proper spacing and adequate light exposure are usually sufficient to maintain plant health and prevent widespread infections.
