Originally native to the dry regions of Eurasia, this plant has become a widespread invasive species globally. It occupies various agricultural landscapes, particularly in steppe and semi-desert zones, where it easily colonizes fallow fields, roadside verges, and disturbed areas lacking strong vegetative competition.
Botanically, the plant is known for its bushy, spherical growth habit, which facilitates its dispersal as a tumbleweed.
