Salvadora persica, commonly known as the toothbrush tree, belongs to the Salvadoraceae family. It is a slow-growing evergreen shrub or small tree specifically adapted to harsh, arid, and saline environments, making it a critical plant for desert ecosystems.
The plant is native to the Middle East, North Africa, and parts of the Indian subcontinent. It thrives in diverse habitats including arid plains, saline soils, and coastal regions, where its physiological adaptations allow it to survive extreme drought conditions and high salinity that would prove toxic to most other crops.
