Dwarf elder, botanically known as Sambucus ebulus, is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Adoxaceae family. Unlike common elderberry species, which grow as shrubs or trees, this plant features annual stems that die back to the ground every winter, emerging from a persistent, creeping rhizome system each spring.

The native distribution of this species spans Central and Southern Europe, the Caucasus, and Western Asia. It thrives in diverse environments, including forest clearings, moist meadows, riverbanks, and disturbed habitats. Due to its vigorous underground rhizomes, it is an efficient colonizer of land and is often considered a perennial weed in poorly managed agricultural fields.

Botanically, the plant stands between 1 to 2 meters tall with upright, unbranched or sparsely branched stems. Its leaves are pinnate, consisting of several serrated leaflets. During late summer, it produces large, flat-topped clusters of white or pinkish-tinted flowers, which develop into small, dark purple-black berries as the season progresses.

Regarding cultivation, dwarf elder prefers deep, fertile, and moist soils. It is highly adaptable to various light conditions, from full sun to partial shade. The most efficient propagation method is the division of rhizomes, which should be planted in early spring. Once established, the plants require minimal intervention due to their robust and competitive nature.

The economic and practical use of Sambucus ebulus is varied. While the berries are toxic if consumed raw, they have historical applications in traditional medicine for their diuretic and anti-inflammatory properties. In rural settings, the plant's strong scent is often utilized as a natural repellent for rodents and garden pests. Common issues include:
