Astrantia epipactis

Astrantia epipactis, historically documented as Sanicula epipactis and widely known as Hacquetia epipactis, is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Apiaceae family. It is a highly regarded garden plant known for its distinctive foliage and early bloom period, providing significant visual interest during the transition from late winter to early spring.

The plant originates from the mountainous regions of Central and Southeastern Europe, naturally inhabiting moist woodlands and limestone-rich slopes. Because of its native environment, it is well-suited for temperate gardens, specifically in northern-facing areas where it receives minimal direct sunlight throughout the year.

Botanically, the plant forms a small, low-growing clump of foliage. The leaves are basal, palmate, and have a rich, deep green appearance that remains stable through the growing season. The inflorescence consists of small, bright yellow florets tightly packed into a globular head, encircled by prominent, yellowish-green bracts that give the plant its characteristic star-like appearance.

Agrotechnical requirements for this species focus on moisture and soil structure. It thrives in humus-rich, well-draining soils that stay consistently moist but never waterlogged.
