Reade's pitcher plant (Sarracenia readei) is a recognized natural hybrid within the Sarraceniaceae family. This carnivorous perennial is primarily distinguished as a hybrid cross between Sarracenia leucophylla and Sarracenia alata. It combines the aesthetic appeal of both parent species, making it a desirable specimen for enthusiasts of bog vegetation.

The origin of this hybrid is native to the southeastern United States, specifically the coastal plains where Sarracenia species naturally intersect. These areas are characterized by nutrient-poor, acidic soils and high humidity, which have driven the plant to develop specialized morphological traits for nutrient acquisition through insect digestion.

Botanically, the plant presents as a cluster of upright, hollow leaves known as pitchers. These structures act as passive traps with a nectar-secreting rim that lures insects toward a slippery interior. The upper parts of the pitchers often exhibit complex vein patterns and reddish coloration, which serve as visual attractants for various types of arthropods.

Agricultural and horticultural requirements for Sarracenia readei are quite specific. It thrives in a mixture of peat moss and perlite, avoiding any mineral-enriched potting mixes which are fatal to the plant. It demands full sun exposure, constant moisture through a tray watering system, and requires a cold dormant period during the winter months to maintain long-term health.
