Lizard's tail

The Lizard's tail (Latin Saururus chinensis) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Saururaceae family. It is a highly specialized aquatic and semi-aquatic plant, naturally thriving in wetlands, marshes, and along the edges of rivers and ponds where the substrate remains consistently waterlogged.

Native to East Asia, the plant is widely distributed across China, Japan, Korea, and parts of the Philippines. Historically, it has been valued both for its aesthetic contribution to water gardens and for its traditional medical applications, where it serves as a basis for various therapeutic preparations.

Botanically, the plant features a creeping rhizome system that allows it to spread rapidly across damp soil. Its stems are erect, reaching heights of 30 to 80 cm, adorned with alternate heart-shaped leaves. A distinguishing feature is the transformation of the upper leaves into a white, bract-like appearance during the flowering season, which draws pollinators and provides visual interest.

Cultivation requirements for Saururus chinensis are specific: it demands high soil moisture and plenty of organic nutrients. It is best suited for pond margins or bog gardens. Growers should note that the plant is quite vigorous and may require containment within planting baskets or physical barriers to prevent it from outcompeting other species in a water feature.
