Botanically, this saxifrage grows in dense, hard cushions composed of small, leathery, imbricated leaves arranged in rosettes. These cushions are perfectly adapted to survival in mountain cracks and crevices, where they collect moisture and essential nutrients from mineral-rich debris. The growth habit is extremely slow, reflecting its origins in harsh, cold environments.
