Rebun saxifrage

Rebun saxifrage (lat. Saxifraga rebunshirensis) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Saxifragaceae family. This species is highly valued in the world of horticulture as a specialty alpine plant, known for its elegant cushion-forming habit and delicate floral display.

The plant originates from Rebun Island, located off the northern coast of Hokkaido, Japan. Its natural habitat is characterized by mountainous terrain with cool temperatures, which dictates its specific requirements when cultivated in domestic gardens or alpine environments.

Botanically, the plant grows in compact, dense rosettes that form low-lying mats. The foliage is typically small and textured, providing a consistent decorative element throughout the season. During the blooming period, it produces slender stems topped with small, exquisite flowers that contrast beautifully with the greenery.

Cultivation requires strict attention to soil composition and water management. Like many alpine species, it thrives in well-draining, gritty, or rocky soils with neutral to slightly acidic pH. Proper drainage is the most critical factor in prevent root rot, as the plant cannot survive in waterlogged or heavy, clay-based conditions.

The plant is primarily used for decorative purposes in rock gardens, scree beds, and trough gardens. Standard maintenance includes regular monitoring for pests such as aphids and spider mites, as well as strict control over moisture levels to prevent fungal diseases that often affect the root crown.
