Live-forever saxifrage

The live-forever saxifrage (Saxifraga sempervivum) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Saxifragaceae family. It is highly valued in horticulture for its dense, succulent rosettes that retain their evergreen color throughout the year, making it a staple for collectors of alpine flora.

The plant originates from the mountain ranges of Southeast Europe, primarily found in the Balkan region. In its native habitat, it grows in rocky crevices and on limestone cliffs, thriving in conditions that would be hostile to most other vegetation. Regarding agrotechnical requirements, the live-forever saxifrage demands excellent drainage. Soils should be gritty, mineral-rich, and neutral to alkaline in pH. It is a heliophilous species, meaning it requires significant sunlight to maintain its compact form, although in regions with intense summer heat, light afternoon shade is recommended to prevent scorching.

The plant is generally resilient but prone to fungal infections if moisture accumulates within the center of the rosettes. Proper spacing and airflow are critical for disease prevention.
