Arabian grass (Schismus arabicus) is an annual grass species belonging to the Poaceae family. Known for its remarkable resilience, it is often found in arid and semi-arid environments where it thrives despite intense heat and long periods of drought.
The species originated in the arid regions of the Middle East and Central Asia. Its distribution spans across North Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, where it serves as an essential part of the local desert flora, adapting perfectly to sandy substrates and volatile climatic conditions.
Botanically, it is a low-growing plant, typically reaching heights of 5 to 25 cm. The stems are tufted and may be prostrate or erect. The leaves are narrow, fine-textured, and often involute, allowing the plant to minimize water loss. The inflorescence is a tight, spike-like panicle, producing numerous small seeds that are vital for its survival in harsh habitats.
Regarding climate and soil, Arabian grass is a quintessential heliophyte, requiring full sunlight to develop fully. It is not demanding in terms of soil quality and excels in light, sandy, or saline soils. Agricultural management of this species involves minimal intervention, focusing primarily on controlled grazing to ensure sustainable reproduction.
