Description
Shore club-rush (lat. Schoenoplectus litoralis) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Sedge family (Cyperaceae). Unlike many other wetland species, this plant is specifically adapted to shallow water habitats and saline soil conditions, making it a valuable resource for specialized agricultural sectors and environmental restoration projects.
The origin of the species is traced to tropical and subtropical regions across Africa, Eurasia, and the Indian Ocean islands. In its natural habitat, it is commonly found along coastal regions, river deltas, and the borders of saline lakes. As a managed crop, it is cultivated in warm climates where soil stabilization or the production of biomass for processing is required.
Botanically, the plant forms robust clusters with erect, essentially leafless, cylindrical stems that can reach heights of 1.5 to 2 meters. It possesses a creeping and highly branched rhizome system, which enables rapid colonization of aquatic sites. The inflorescences consist of characteristic spikelets located at the stem tips, a key morphological feature for identification.
Cultivation requirements include a high demand for solar radiation and constant water availability. The plant is notably salt-tolerant, allowing it to thrive on reclaimed lands where other vegetation fails. Standard agrotechnical practices involve planting rhizome cuttings into prepared soil at a depth of 20–30 cm once water temperatures consistently remain above 15 degrees Celsius.
