Drooping bulrush (Scirpus radicans) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Cyperaceae family. It is characterized by its unique growth habit, where long, arching stems often bend down to the soil or water surface and take root at the nodes, forming dense, self-propagating clusters that help stabilize saturated soils.
This species is native to temperate regions of Europe and Asia, typically found in marshes, wet meadows, and along the banks of stagnant or slow-moving water bodies. While not a traditional food crop, it serves as an essential component in environmental restoration and sustainable landscape management due to its role in habitat preservation.
Botanically, the plant features slender, leafy culms that can reach heights of up to 100 cm. Its inflorescence consists of a loose, drooping panicle of spikelets. The leaves are narrow and linear, providing a vibrant green texture to the landscape. The root system is fibrous and aggressive, making it highly effective at colonizing silty substrates.
In terms of agricultural and environmental requirements, Drooping bulrush thrives in constantly waterlogged soils or shallow water (up to 30 cm deep).
