Pyrenean hawkbit

Pyrenean hawkbit (Latin: Scorzoneroides pyrenaica) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Asteraceae family. Historically, this plant was classified under the Leontodon genus, but it is now recognized as a distinct species within the Scorzoneroides genus. It is characterized by its basal leaf rosette and solitary, bright yellow flower heads that bloom during the short alpine summer.

The native distribution area of this species is centered in the mountain ranges of Southern and Western Europe, specifically the Pyrenees and the Alps. It is a typical species of subalpine meadows, adapted to thin soils and cool, humid climates. Its resilience to low temperatures and frost makes it a key species in stable mountain grassland ecosystems.

Botanically, the plant features a deep taproot that allows it to survive in rocky and nutrient-poor soils. The leaves are typically lanceolate and slightly hairy, which serves as an adaptation to prevent excessive moisture loss in wind-exposed high-altitude environments. The plant reproduces primarily through seed dispersal, which is facilitated by the wind.

Cultivation requirements for Pyrenean hawkbit include well-drained, nutrient-rich soils and full sun exposure. While not typically cultivated as a single crop, it is an essential component of high-quality alpine pasture seed mixes. Agronomically, it requires minimal intervention but benefits from controlled grazing, which prevents more aggressive shrub species from invading the grassland.

Its primary agricultural use is as forage for livestock. It provides high nutritional value during the peak growing season, making it a desirable herb for grazing sheep and cattle.
