Chalk figwort (lat. Scrophularia cretacea) is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Scrophulariaceae family. This species is a rare endemic, evolutionary adapted to survive on exposed chalk deposits where basic soil chemistry is the dominant survival factor.

The geographic distribution of this species is confined to specific chalk outcrops across Eastern European steppes. It is a calcicole plant, meaning it thrives in alkaline soils rich in calcium carbonate, which are typically nutrient-poor and physically challenging for many other plant species.

The botanical structure of the plant includes a tetragonous stem and serrated leaves. The flowers are arranged in thyrsoid inflorescences and exhibit the characteristic structure of the Scrophularia genus. Its root system is exceptionally efficient at penetrating hard geological strata to find water pockets within the rocks.

Cultivation requirements are strict: the soil must be well-drained and alkaline. High moisture levels or nitrogen-rich soils are lethal to this plant, as it has evolved to occupy a niche with minimal organic matter content. Sunlight exposure should be high, as the plant is a typical inhabitant of open, unsheltered landscapes.

From a utilization perspective, the Chalk figwort is primarily studied for conservation and habitat restoration. Its ability to stabilize loose, chalky slopes makes it a potential candidate for ecological restoration of former quarries and degraded limestone landscapes, although commercial exploitation is non-existent due to its protected status.
