Formosan stonecrop

Formosan stonecrop (Sedum formosanum) is a perennial succulent plant belonging to the Crassulaceae family. It is highly valued in horticulture for its resilience, compact growth habit, and ability to thrive in harsh, nutrient-poor environments where most other garden plants would fail.

The native habitat of this species covers parts of Eastern Asia, specifically Taiwan, the southern regions of Japan, and the Philippines. It typically grows on limestone cliffs, coastal sand dunes, and rocky outcrops, which has endowed the plant with a natural tolerance to salinity and prolonged dry spells.

Botanically, it is characterized by succulent, obovate leaves that appear glossy and vibrant. The plant reaches a height of about 15–20 centimeters. During its peak flowering season, it produces dense clusters of bright yellow, star-shaped flowers with five petals, which attract various pollinators to the garden.

Cultivation requirements are relatively straightforward, focusing on excellent soil drainage and full sun exposure. It is a perfect candidate for xeriscaping, as it requires minimal irrigation once established. In terms of soil, a mix that mimics its natural rocky habitat, such as sandy or gravelly loam, is preferred to prevent root rot.

It is increasingly popular for green roof installations due to its shallow root system and high drought resistance.
