The plant originates from the mountainous regions of Southern Europe, specifically endemic to parts of Italy. It has evolved to survive in challenging alpine conditions, thriving in rocky crevices and well-drained soils. Its native habitat defines its high tolerance for poor soil quality and intense solar exposure, which are key traits for its successful cultivation in various garden settings.

Botanically, it features creeping, rooting stems that form dense mats of fleshy, egg-shaped leaves. These leaves act as water storage organs, allowing the plant to remain vibrant during long periods of drought. During the summer, the plant produces delicate, star-shaped flowers, typically white or pale pink, which add a sophisticated texture to the overall aesthetic.
