Red stonecrop, botanically known as Sedum rubens, is an annual succulent plant belonging to the Crassulaceae family. Unlike many of its perennial relatives, this species completes its life cycle within one season, often leaving behind a significant amount of seeds that ensure propagation for the following year.
Originating from the Mediterranean region and parts of Western Asia, this plant is naturally adapted to harsh, arid environments. It is commonly found on rocky outcrops, sandy dunes, and poor, stony soils where sunlight is abundant and competition from larger vegetation is low. This evolutionary history makes it an extremely hardy plant for specific garden niches.
The morphology of the plant is defined by its small, fleshy, cylindrical leaves that turn reddish or bronze under direct sunlight—hence its common name.
