Sedum stefco

Sedum stefco is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Crassulaceae family. This species is a low-growing succulent that is highly valued in both agriculture and landscape design for its high decorative appeal and its ability to adapt to extreme environmental conditions.

The plant originates from the mountainous regions of the Balkan Peninsula, where it naturally adapted to rocky and nutrient-poor soils. Today, its cultivation area covers temperate climatic zones, where the sedum is successfully grown as a groundcover crop for rock gardens and arid landscape sections.

Botanically, the species is characterized by dense, fleshy leaves capable of storing moisture, which ensures high drought resistance. The stems are typically creeping, forming thick mats. Flowering occurs in the summer, when the plant produces short stalks with small, star-shaped flowers, most commonly in yellow or golden hues.

Sedum stefco is undemanding regarding climatic conditions, although it prefers open areas with full sun exposure. In the shade, the plant loses its compactness and decorative value. The soil should be loose, well-drained, and predominantly sandy or rocky; stagnant moisture around the root collar can be fatal to this species.

Agricultural management requires minimal maintenance: watering is only needed during periods of extreme drought, and fertilization is rarely necessary, as excess nitrogen leads to leggy growth. The main use of the plant is in creating carpet compositions, slope stabilization, and green roofing, which is due to its low maintenance and ability to grow in shallow substrates.
