The native range of this plant includes coastal regions of Australia, New Zealand, and parts of Chile. Having evolved in coastal salt marshes and estuaries, the plant possesses remarkable physiological adaptations that allow it to thrive in saline environments, areas prone to periodic inundation, and diverse soil types ranging from sand to heavy clay.
