Thompson's Houseleek (lat. Sempervivum thompsonianum) is a perennial succulent plant species belonging to the Crassulaceae family. Characterized by its rosette-forming growth habit, this species is highly valued in horticulture for its resilience and ability to thrive in poor, rocky environments where most traditional agricultural crops would fail.
Originating from mountain ranges, this species is native to high-altitude regions with harsh climatic conditions. Its natural habitat is typically rocky slopes and scree, which has shaped its physiological adaptation to cold, high UV exposure, and periodic drought. In gardening, it is primarily used in alpine gardens and xeric landscapes.
The botanical structure consists of dense, fleshy leaves arranged in a geometric rosette pattern. These leaves are adapted to store water, allowing the plant to remain turgid even during extended dry spells. The root system is shallow and fibrous, making the plant exceptionally well-suited for shallow containers and stone crevices, provided the drainage is optimal.
Regarding agrotechnical requirements, the substrate must be lean and highly permeable, consisting of mineral-rich soil components such as grit, sand, and crushed volcanic rock. The plant requires full sun to maintain its compact form and vibrant color; partial shade may lead to etiolation. Watering should be infrequent, ensuring the soil dries out completely between irrigation events.
